Driving Atomic-Scale Structure Changes with Ultrashort Pulses of Light

Abstract

The interaction of short, intense pulses of light with solids is an attractive possible means of control over materials on time scales approaching or even exceeding the period of atomic vibrations. Recent developments have led to dramatic progress in our understanding of how light-induced phenomena can alter material properties more than 1000 times faster than currently realized in modern technology.
