Title

The Growth and Evolution of Supermassive Black Holes

Abstract

Over the last two decades, X-ray surveys have revolutionized our understanding of the cosmic growth of supermassive black holes, revealing a large population of obscured objects which dominate the accretion history of the Universe and may have important consequences for galaxy evolution. The current status of this field will be reviewed, as will the prospects for future developments through new X-ray missions.
