Title

Spin and orbital transport in condensed matter: from spintronic devices to quantum spin torques

Abstract

Nonequilibrium spin and orbital currents mediate the transfer of angular momentum between neighbouring materials. Decoupling these currents from the flow of electronic charges opens avenues for the electrical control of the magnetization in both metals and insulators, encompassing ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, on short temporal and spatial scales. I will present recent results that unravel the generation, transport, and absorption of angular momenta in magnetic and nonmagnetic heterostructures, surpassing the limitations of conventional spin currents. Device demonstrations will include magnetic logic gates and magnetic random access memories. I will also discuss experiments designed to leverage spin torques to perform quantum operations on individual spins.
