Title

The CMS Experiment at the LHC: From its Conception to First Physics Results

Abstract

Since March 2010 the CMS experiment, one of the four large LHC detectors, has registered proton-proton interactions at an unprecedented centre of-mass energy of 7 TeV. With the exploration of this new energy regime particle physics is entering a new era in fundamental science. In this talk we will first present the challenges, which had to be faced during the design, construction and commissioning of the CMS detector, and then report on the highlights among the physics results obtained so far.
